Manuka Honey is honey that is harvested from bees that collect pollen from the New Zealand Manuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium). It is known to have strong antibacterial properties and a distinctive flavour.
Most honeys are antibacterial in some respect. This antibacterial ability is mostly derived from Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), which comes from an enzyme, added by the bee. In the honey industry this is called "Peroxide Activity". Peroxide activity is delicate and unstable and can easily be destroyed by heat, light and water. However, in Manuka honey there is another, non-peroxide, antiseptic agent that is much more robust and can remain active against certain bacteria after being exposed to heat, light and water. This unique, non-peroxide antiseptic agent can be tested for and measured in various ways including UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor) , or MGOTM (Methylglyoxal).
Methylglyoxal measurement is a recent development, based on the discovery in 2006 that the naturally-occurring compound Methyglyoxal is the dominant anti-bacterial constituent in Manuka honey from New Zealand. The test for Methyglyoxal concentration uses highly-accurate and automated HPLC laboratory analysis. The number shows the tested concentration of Methyglyoxal mg/kg, ie MGO400+ has a concentration of more than 400mg of Methylglyoxal per kg of honey. (More than 100 mg/kg is the minimum necessary to kill all major bacteria types).
Propolis is made from a natural resin found in the young buds of trees. Bees collect the resin, mix it with their own enzymes and beeswax to make propolis, and use it to seal and protect the hive, creating the most sterile environment known in nature.
Propolis has a very high level of bioflavonoids – substances that naturally form an essential part of a plant’s immune system.
Established in 2006 and using leading edge scientific research, Manuka Health is a pioneer in developing a growing range of innovative natural products utilising the unique healing properties of bioactive compounds found only in New Zealand native flora and fauna.
The native flora of New Zealand is unique, having evolved in isolation for millions of years. The bioactive compounds sourced from New Zealand are either unique to New Zealand or are at elevated levels when compared to similar species elsewhere. Manuka Health focusses on these unique bioactives and adds value with world class analysis, technology and research.
They work with foremost scientific research centres in Japan, USA, UK, Germany, Australia and New Zealand to demonstrate the efficacy of their products including MGO™ Manuka Honey, BIO30™ New Zealand Propolis, fresh New Zealand Royal Jelly, functional foods and supplements, MGO™ Manuka Honey-based wound care and skincare.
